Course & Assessment Weights

Course Weight:

The total number of points a learner can earn in the course. Calculated by adding up the weight of every assessment in the course.

Assessment Weight:

Determines how much an assessment affects the learner's overall grade for the course. Configured when the assessment is created in the Course Manager.

Converting an Assessment Grade into the Assessment Weight:
  1. Calculate the learner's assessment grade: Assessment Grade / Assessment Score
  2. Multiply the learner's assessment grade by the Assessment Weight
  3. This is the learner's score for the assessment weight
Example:

A course has two assessments:

  • Assessment One: Weight 20, Score 50
  • Assessment Two: Weight 40, Score 80

The learner earns a 35/50 on Assessment One and a 70/80 on Assessment Two.

Assessment One:

  • Assessment Grade: 35/50 = 70%
  • Assessment Weight: 20
  • Score for assessment weight: 70% * 20 = 14

Assessment Two:

  • Assessment Grade: 70/80 = 87.5%
  • Assessment Weight: 40
  • Score for assessment weight: 87.5% * 40 = 35

The learner's score for the course is calculated by adding up their scores for each assessment weight:

14 + 35 = 49

The learner has earned 49 points out of a possible 60, which is a grade of 81.67%.
